The Dutch state railway (NS) has expanded their training simulator ‘Virtueel Materieel’ with the Sprinter Light Train (STL), the newest
train type to enter service in the Netherlands. The NS has ordered some
100 SLTs of which the first was delivered in 2008.
The SLT is the fifth train type to be simulated with VSTEP’s virtual
training simulator 'Virtueel Materieel'. Using training simulators to
develop and maintain the competencies of drivers is an integral part of
NS’s training philosophy. The railways has a network of multimedia
computers at over 40 stations across the country where train drivers
can practice their procedural skills in between jobs without the need
to have an instructor present or take rolling stock out of service.

For the Dutch organisation VoortVarend Besparen, which promotes energy
efficient sailing within the maritime industry, VSTEP has developed a
special version of its Ship Simulator game. The simulator learns users
to navigate their vessels in an energy efficient way through the Port
of Rotterdam. The relationship between navigation and fuel consumption
is shown in an entertaining and realistic way, allowing users to
immediately see the impact of their navigation on the energy
consumption of their vessel. VoortVarend Besparen will distribute this
version amongst its members and partners within the maritime industry
to create awareness for a energy efficient sailing policy. More
